The severity of sea level rising depends on how much the earth’s average temperature continues to rise.Ī 2015 report from Climate Central looked at what would happen if that temperature increased by 4 degrees. The other map gives a look at what impact rising sea levels could have by 2100. One of the maps is a worst case scenario, and looks at what would happen if sea levels were allowed to rise out of control, by about 30 metres - this is very unlikely. HampshireLive has put together a number of screenshots and an interactive map that show how Climate Central predictions could impact some of the county’s coastal communities. The potential devastation in Hampshire is perhaps worse than other coastal areas around England, with the prospect of whole cities becoming submerged. However, that is in a worst case scenario and does not take into account any efforts to combat global warming. Some of that data has been collated into a number of different maps that show a global outlook, many of which predict that chunks of Hampshire could lose vast amounts of coastline. Researchers from Climate Central, an American organisation which looks at climate science, have written a number of reports that detail how probable that is. There is significant evidence and research about the likely effects of man-made global warming, with one of the biggest consequences being the melting of ice sheets and glaciers causing sea levels to rise. Portsmouth and Southampton could both end up completely underwater if efforts to tackle climate change are not made, experts have warned.
